Top 3 Family Favorite Meals: A Mix of and Flavour

What are your family’s top 3 favorite meals?

Meals at our family table mix tradition, indulgence, and creativity. Though each has its own favourite, the following three dishes have won a unanimous vote, especially from the kids.

1. Kerala Vegetarian Meal:There is nothing like the comfort of a traditional Kerala vegetarian spread! Served on a banana leaf, this meal comprises rice, sambar, avail, pickles, and curries. The riot of colours and flavours speaks volumes about our culture, and this is one wholesome way to get the kids to eat up their veggies, although they are mostly in it for the papadams!

  1. Hyderabadi Biryani
Aromatic, spiced rice cooked with tender bits of chicken, is a family favourite on any special occasion. The kids love it because the intense flavours make it a little ‘treasure hunt’ with cashews and raisins buried among the layers. Pair it with raita, and you have one meal that’s as festive as it gets.
  2. Butter Chicken with Naan
is a creamy, mildly spiced comfort food for the kids. They adore scooping soft, warm naan into the rich, flavoured butter chicken gravy. They ask for it often on a weekend dinner or movie night, and it never disappoints.

These meals are more than just food; they are ways to celebrate love, family, and our cultural roots. What are your top three favourite family meals?

Yes, the original Hyderabadi biryani recipe can be a bit spicy, but the beauty of cooking at home is that you can adjust the spices according to your taste. For a milder version, try reducing the chilli powder or opting for sweeter spices, such as cinnamon and cardamom, which give flavour without too much heat.

Regarding butter chicken, I completely understand! At the start, it sounds tricky, but getting the gravy to the right consistency is somewhat tricky. Never give up! It’s one of those dishes that keeps getting more accessible and enjoyable with time. If you need any guidance, I recommend checking out VahChef on YouTube. His recipes are apparent, and his talkative yet entertaining approach makes cooking fun.

Let me know if you try either dish again; I’d love to hear how it turns out!
