Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

Holiday cooking has always been about celebrating traditions and connecting with family. Growing up in Kerala, dishes like Ada Pradhaman, Unniyappam, Palappam, and stew—both vegetable and chicken—hold a special place in my heart. These are more than just recipes; they are stories of love, nostalgia, and shared moments.
Ada Pradhaman is the showstopper of any celebration, with its rich blend of rice flakes, jaggery, and coconut milk. The slow cooking process and irresistible aroma remind me of elders skillfully preparing it during festivals. Unniyappam, with its soft, golden texture and sweetness, brings back memories of family gatherings where everyone eagerly awaited the first batch, savouring them hot and fresh.
Another favourite is Palappam with vegetable or chicken stew. The lacy, soft Palappams paired with the creamy, mildly spiced stew create a festive and homely meal. The dish brings people together, filling the room with laughter and lively conversation.
Today, for dessert, I’ve decided to step away from tradition and make a cheesecake decorated with fresh strawberries. While it’s a modern addition, its creamy texture and vibrant topping add a delightful, refreshing touch to the holiday spread. It’s currently sitting in the refrigerator, promising to be the perfect sweet finish to the day.
Whether rooted in tradition or inspired by modern flavours, these dishes bring joy through their taste and the memories and connections they create.
