Was today typical?

Have you ever had one of those days that seemed ordinary but ended up leaving a lasting impact on you? Today was one of those days for me.

My day began with the familiar end of my night duty. After a long shift, I went through my usual morning routine and finally got some much-needed sleep. I woke up around 3 pm, refreshed and ready to attend church to celebrate Saint Alphonsa’s feast.

The church was filled with a sense of community and devotion. The priest’s sermon was particularly moving as he shared a young nun’s testimony. As a teenager, her friends persuaded her to watch a romantic movie. In the film, the heroine loses her lover, profoundly affecting her. This story resonated with the young nun, leading her to dedicate her life to waiting for Christ. The parallel between the character’s journey and the young nun’s real-life devotion was striking and left a lasting impression on me.

After the church service, my day ended with a quiet evening at home. My wife mentioned she had watched half of a movie and wanted to finish it before bed. The film’s conclusion was bittersweet. It depicts an elderly couple who marry but are later neglected by their children. The woman’s final wish was to be buried beside her first husband, a wish unfulfilled as the old man walked away in sorrow.

Reflecting on my day, I realise that while it had the usual elements of routine—night duty, sleep, and daily activities—it was also punctuated by moments of significance and emotion. From the inspiring sermon to the poignant movie ending, today blended the ordinary and the extraordinary.

Usually, I turn to my guitar to uplift my spirits in the evening, strumming fragments of melodies to bring joy. However, yesterday was different. The weight of the day’s reflections and the sad movie ending left me in a contemplative mood, deviating from my usual nightly routine.

So, was today typical? In many ways, it was. Yet, the meaningful experiences and unexpected reflections made it unique, reminding me that even the most routine days can carry profound moments.
